Abstract

Born from the Modern Movement, the cities of La Grande Motte (1974), Brasília (1960) and Chandigarh (1953) are each characterised by their distinctive architecture. These three works of contemporary heritage question man's place in the city and the promise of utopia. Light, dedicated spaces and freedom of movement provide a readiness to dream, to be lived in. The interaction between Stéphane Herbert's photographs and the poetry of Carole Lenfant invites one to an urban promenade punctuated by games of shadows and the density of the colours. Architectural harmony, temporality of the body, the voyage begins around Jean Balladur's pyramids, passes by Oscar Niemeyer's domes, then ends on the esplanade of Le Corbusier's Capitol. From the beaches of the Mediterranean to the new civilization that is Brazil to immemorial India: an invitation to meditate on three anticonformist and dreamlike cities, three cities that are open and universal.

Abstract

This title is a reference work on modern architecture by Kenneth Frampton, one of today's leading architectural theorists. Conceived as a genealogy of twentieth century architecture from 1924 to 2000, it compiles some sixteen comparative analyses of canonical modern buildings ranging from exhibition pavilions and private houses to office buildings and various kinds of public institutions. The buildings are compared in terms of their hierarchical spatial order, circulation structure and referential details. The analyses are organized so as to show what is similar and different between two paired types, thus revealing how modern tradition has been diversely inflected. Richly illustrated, this book is a new standard work in architectural education.

Abstract

In the third volume of the new series exploring the foundational theories and works of architects Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, more than 150 buildings are documented through floor plans, axonometric projections, recent color photographs, and halftones. The buildings, many of them relatively unknown, were chosen in order to provide a basis for looking at metropolitan design in the twentieth century, and they show the patterns and differences found in architecture from around the world. Included is an essay that provides meaningful context for the buildings and examines how local government and zoning practices guide architecture. A powerful example of the unlimited potential for urban design, Typology offers a new point of view in municipal planning and architecture.

Abstract

In the decades following World War Two, and in part in response to the Cold War, governments across Western Europe set out ambitious programmes for social welfare and the redistribution of wealth that aimed to improve the everyday lives of their citizens. Many of these welfare state programmes - housing, schools, new towns, cultural and leisure centres – involved not just construction but a new approach to architectural design, in which the welfare objectives of these state-funded programmes were delineated and debated. The impact on architects and architectural design was profound and far-reaching, with welfare state projects moving centre-stage in architectural discourse not just in Europe but worldwide. This is the first book to explore the architecture of the welfare state in Western Europe from an international perspective. With chapters covering Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden and the UK, the book explores the complex role played by architecture in the formation and development of the welfare state in both theory and practice.
